Ascent Profile
Home Up

An immediate steep ascent from Buttermere to the 500m high home of High Snockrigg, and a level crossing of the boggy Buttermere Moss which feeds the waterfalls of Moss Force at Newlands Hause. Once crossed, another steep ascent to the summit of the routes first bagged Wainwright, Robinson. From here, follow the fence down from the summit and along Hindscarth Edge to a point where the fence turns down right and back into Buttermere. At this point, a track bears left away from the main ridge to ascend steadily up the upper North facing slopes of Hindscarth to the summit cairn. A shelter can be found a little beyond the cairn which looks down into the Newlands Valley and across to High Spy and Maiden Moor.

From the summit, turn back South-West and follow the ridge track back to the main Hindscarth Edge where a left turn South is taken. Hindscarth Edge from here leads to the routes highest summit of Dalehead, where a 10ft high cairn stands. Leave the summit in a South-West direction to pick up the track and eventually a wall which drops you down to the Honistor Pass and its old mine workings.

From Honistor Pass, head up the old mine track which twists and turns several times. This eventually comes to an abrupt end where faint tracks can be followed across the top of Honistor Crags to the routes final summit of Fleetwith Pike. Tired legs should be careful from here as the steep descent down the face of Fleetwith Pike will leave many peoples legs burning. Once at the bottom, either follow the road back to Buttermere or take in the public footpath around the South-West side of the lake to the village.
